"Even though Delilah only gets a few lines in the Book of Judges (16:4), she has been known throughout history as the ultimate temptress. Movies, TV specials and, not least, operas have been written about her plot with the Philistines to emasculate Samson. In Philadelphia, another Delilah is seducing us. That’s Delilah Winder, of the six retail shops bearing her name." (The Philadelphia City Paper, Food, October 26–November 2, 2000)
Delilah Winder, chef and entrepreneur, has had a passion for food and entertaining since her childhood days in Virginia. She shares what she's learned in her first cookbook, Delilah's Everyday Soul. A recent Oprah show featured the "best of the best"—and her mac and cheese was chosen the best macaroni and cheese in the country.
Delilah Winder left a career as a business analyst to open her one-woman food stand in Philadelphia’s historic Reading Terminal Market. Today, she employs more than 60 people who work in six Delilah’s Southern Cuisine stands. In 2000, she opened Bluezette (now closed), a Latin, Caribbean, and soul food restaurant in Philadelphia’s Old City district. Delilah’s food has received numerous accolades, including Best Mac & Cheese by Oprah Winfrey, 100 Favorite Foods by Saveur Magazine, and Best of Philly. Delilah’s cooking has been featured on many national television food shows, including Food Network’s The Best of Southern Cuisine, and CBS's Chef On A Shoestring.
Delilah is the girl on the Philadelphia food scene. She "grew up in Richmond, Virginia, where meals were events morning, noon and night. "I woke up to eat!" she says, lovingly recalling the aromas which would wake her up and send her rushing downstairs to dig into her grandma's homemade biscuits. "My grandma made those biscuits from scratch every morning," she continues. "We'd all sit at the table for every meal. Everything would be laid out in platters. She'd make fried chicken every Sunday morning, along with biscuits, gravy, bacon and eggs, homemade preserves—and grandma worked, too!" Grandma Catherine Howard is in her 90s now, but she's still cooking. Little Delilah isn't so little anymore, but she's doing some mighty fine cooking of her own." |
